The writing process
The best way to come up with a polished piece of writing is to follow the writing process: 1. Pre-write- Write your ideas down (setting, characters, plot, title, beginning, middle and end) for the piece of writing you are getting ready to partake in. Organize what you will implement in your piece. Sometimes visual stimulus is good for the writer. Gather photos, illustrations etc. to help you write your piece, if you think it will help motivate you. 2. Draft- Use your pre-writing list and draft away. This part of writing should be very creative. Let it flow! Don't worry about grammatical or spelling errors yet. 3. Get a response- Who ever responds, one person or a group audience should listen, not read your draft. This is important because not only will your audience hear it out loud, but you will too. It makes a huge difference! You may decide while hearing your draft out loud, that right then and there you will make changes to your draft. Get your audience to tell what they liked about the piece and to offer suggestions to improve it. 4. Revise- You have ownership of your piece, you decide whose suggestions you'll use to improve it, if any at all. Make notes of any changes on the draft itself use it as your reference and draft again! 5. Edit- Now edit your second draft. I usually use editing symbols for punctuation, grammar etc. and edit right on the piece. I might still feel the need to add more, or take out portions of the piece even after drafting the second time.I make note of this as well. 6. Final draft- Make a conscientious effort to make this draft shine! Use your second draft as a reference and draft away for your final draft! Check out your first draft as opposed to your final draft! What a difference, right? Now you have a polished piece of writing! Your writing skills will improve tremendously by using this method. Get a group together and start a writer's club. Keep writing portfolios to refer to so you can evaluate your work! You'll improve in no time! |
